Formulas

How Percentage Calculation Works

Every percentage problem boils down to four core formulas. Here they are — with plain-English explanations and worked examples.

1 What is X% of Y?

Used for discounts, taxes, tips, and commissions.

Result = (X ÷ 100) × Y

E.g., 15% of 15,000 = (15 ÷ 100) × 15,000 = 2,250

2 Percentage Increase Formula

Used for salary hikes, price rises, investment growth.

New = Original × (1 + Rate ÷ 100)

E.g., Increase 1,000 by 20% = 1,000 × 1.20 = 1,200

3 Percentage Decrease Formula

Used for sale discounts, EMI reduction, depreciation.

New = Original × (1 - Rate ÷ 100)

E.g., Decrease 5,000 by 12% = 5,000 × 0.88 = 4,400

4 Percentage Difference Formula

Used for year-over-year comparisons, exam score changes.

% Change = ((Y - X) ÷ X) × 100

E.g., 80 → 100: ((100 - 80) ÷ 80) × 100 = +25%

Percentage Increase Calculator

The Percentage Increase Calculator finds the new value after applying a percentage rise. Formula: New Value = Original × (1 + Rate/100). Commonly used for salary hike calculations (₹50,000 + 10% = ₹55,000), GST addition (₹1,000 + 18% = ₹1,180), and investment growth projections. Use the Increase tab above to compute this instantly.

Percentage Decrease Calculator

The Percentage Decrease Calculator finds the new value after applying a percentage reduction. Formula: New Value = Original × (1 - Rate/100). Used for calculating sale prices (₹5,000 at 12% off = ₹4,400), depreciation of assets, and budget cuts. Switch to the Decrease tab above to try it.

Percentage Difference Calculator

The Percentage Difference (or Percentage Change) Calculator measures how much a value has changed relative to its starting point. Formula: ((Final − Initial) / Initial) × 100. A positive result means an increase; negative means a decrease. Perfect for comparing exam scores, revenue figures, population counts, or stock prices over time.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

To find a percentage of a number, use the formula: Result = (Percentage ÷ 100) × Number. For example, 15% of 15,000 = (15 ÷ 100) × 15,000 = 2,250. Use the Basic % tab in this calculator to get the answer instantly.

Percentage increase formula: New Value = Original × (1 + Rate ÷ 100). For example, increasing ₹1,000 by 20% gives ₹1,000 × 1.20 = ₹1,200. The increase amount is ₹200. Use the Increase tab in this calculator to compute it automatically.

Percentage decrease formula: New Value = Original × (1 − Rate ÷ 100). For example, decreasing ₹5,000 by 12% gives ₹5,000 × 0.88 = ₹4,400. The deducted amount is ₹600. Use the Decrease tab above to solve it in one click.

Percentage difference (change) = ((Final Value − Initial Value) ÷ Initial Value) × 100. A positive result means an increase; a negative result means a decrease. Example: from 80 to 100 = ((100 − 80) ÷ 80) × 100 = +25%. Use the Diff tab above.

Use the formula: Base = Known Result ÷ (Rate ÷ 100). Example: if 2,250 is 15% of a number, then Base = 2,250 ÷ 0.15 = 15,000. Switch to the Reverse % tab in this calculator to solve any reverse percentage problem instantly.

Markup is profit as a percentage of cost: Markup% = (Profit ÷ Cost) × 100. Margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price: Margin% = (Profit ÷ Selling Price) × 100. For the same transaction, markup is always higher than margin. Use the Margin tab to calculate both.

To add GST: GST Amount = (GST Rate ÷ 100) × Base Price. Total Price = Base Price + GST Amount. Example: 18% GST on ₹2,500 = ₹450, so the total is ₹2,950. Use the Basic % tab with 18 as X and your price as Y to get the GST amount instantly.

Discounted Price = Original Price × (1 − Discount% ÷ 100). Example: 30% off ₹1,200 = ₹1,200 × 0.70 = ₹840. You save ₹360. Use the Decrease tab to compute sale prices, or try the dedicated Discount Calculator for more options.

To find salary after a hike: New Salary = Current Salary × (1 + Hike% ÷ 100). Example: ₹50,000 salary with a 10% hike = ₹50,000 × 1.10 = ₹55,000. To find what % increase you received: ((New − Old) ÷ Old) × 100. Use the Increase or Diff tabs above.

Percentage = (Marks Obtained ÷ Total Marks) × 100. Example: if you scored 450 out of 600, your percentage = (450 ÷ 600) × 100 = 75%. Use the Basic % tab: enter 100 as X and (obtained/total) as decimal, or use the Diff tab to compare two exam scores.

15% of 15,000 = (15 ÷ 100) × 15,000 = 2,250. This is the default example in the Basic % tab. Common use case: calculating a 15% commission on ₹15,000 in sales, or finding a 15% tip on a ₹15,000 hotel bill.

ROI% = ((Current Value − Initial Investment) ÷ Initial Investment) × 100. Example: if you invested ₹1,00,000 and your portfolio is now worth ₹1,25,000, your ROI = ((1,25,000 − 1,00,000) ÷ 1,00,000) × 100 = +25%. Use the Diff tab with initial and final values.

Percentage Change = ((New Value − Old Value) ÷ Old Value) × 100. A positive result indicates growth; negative indicates decline. This formula applies to price changes, population growth, revenue comparisons, and any before-and-after scenario. The Diff tab in this calculator computes it automatically.
