How Marks Percentage Is Calculated

01

Marks Percentage Formula

Marks percentage is calculated by dividing total marks obtained by the total maximum marks possible, then multiplying by 100: Marks % = (Marks Obtained ÷ Total Maximum Marks) × 100. This applies the same way whether calculating a single exam, a full marksheet, or reverse-solving for a target score.

02

Board Exam Calculation Nuances

For CBSE board exams, the overall percentage is commonly based on marks from the best five subjects, including one compulsory language paper, rather than every subject taken. A common mistake is mixing theory and practical marks incorrectly; both should be added together before dividing by the combined maximum marks for that subject.

03

Worked Percentage Example

If a student scores 436 marks out of a possible 500, the percentage is (436 ÷ 500) × 100 = 87.20%, which typically qualifies as a First Class with Distinction under most Indian grading scales (75% and above). To reverse-solve for an 85% target out of 600 total marks, the required marks are (85 ÷ 100) × 600 = 510 marks.

04

Grading Cutoffs and Related Tools

Common Indian classification cutoffs are 75%+ for Distinction, 60-74.9% for First Class, 50-59.9% for Second Class, and 35-49.9% for a Pass Class, though exact bands vary by institution. Use the CGPA to Percentage Calculator when your marksheet reports a CGPA instead of raw marks, or the SGPA Calculator for semester-based university grading.

Quick answers about how this tool works.

Marks percentage is calculated by dividing total marks obtained by total maximum marks and multiplying by 100: Marks % = (Marks Obtained / Total Maximum Marks) × 100.

Sum the marks obtained across your best 5 or 6 main subjects, divide by total maximum marks (e.g. 500 or 600), and multiply by 100.
