Attendance Percentage Formula

The attendance percentage formula calculates the proportion of classes attended out of total classes conducted. To maintain a required target criteria (such as 75%), bunk guidance...

How Attendance Percentage & Bunk Margin Work

01

Attendance Percentage Formula

Attendance percentage is calculated by dividing classes attended by total classes conducted, then multiplying by 100: Attendance % = (Classes Attended ÷ Total Classes Conducted) × 100. Most Indian colleges and universities (VTU, Anna University, Delhi University, Mumbai University) set a minimum threshold of 75% for students to remain eligible to sit semester exams.

02

Bunk Margin vs Shortage Recovery

When attendance is above the target percentage, the calculator uses Bunkable Classes = floor[(Attended − Threshold × Total) ÷ Threshold] to show how many upcoming lectures can still be missed safely. A common mistake is ignoring that each additional class held increases the total class count, which pulls the percentage down faster later in the semester than students expect.

03

Shortage Recovery Example

If attendance drops below the threshold, required consecutive classes are found using Classes Needed = ceil[(Threshold × Total − Attended) ÷ (1 − Threshold)]. For example, a student who attended 25 of 40 classes held (62.5%) must attend 20 consecutive classes without missing any to bring attendance back up to the 75% criteria.

Medical Condonation & Related Tools

Many universities allow a relaxed 65% threshold with an approved medical certificate instead of the standard 75% rule, which this calculator supports via the target criteria selector. Use the Grade Calculator to plan overall course performance or the SGPA Calculator to track semester academic standing alongside your attendance record.

Quick answers about how this tool works.

Attendance percentage is calculated by dividing total classes attended by total classes conducted: Attendance % = (Attended Classes / Total Classes) × 100.

If your attendance is above 75%, use the formula: Bunk Classes = floor([(Attended Classes - (0.75 × Total Classes)) / 0.75]). For example, with 35 attended out of 40 total, you can bunk 6 classes.

If your attendance is below 75%, use the formula: Classes Needed = ceil([(0.75 × Total Classes) - Attended Classes] / 0.25). For example, with 25 attended out of 40 total, you must attend 20 consecutive classes to reach 75%.

Most Indian autonomous and technical universities (VTU, Anna University, DU, Mumbai University, SPPU, AKTU, AICTE) mandate a minimum of 75% attendance per course subject.

Yes! Our tool includes a multi-subject course manager that tracks subject-wise attendance and calculates your overall aggregate attendance percentage.

Many universities allow a 10% relaxation (lowering threshold from 75% to 65%) upon submission of approved medical certificates. You can customize the target percentage in our calculator.
