How Weighted Grades & Final Exam Targets Work

01

Weighted Grade Formula

The overall weighted course grade sums each assessment score multiplied by its weight, then divides by the total weight entered: Weighted Grade = Σ(Score × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weight). This normalizes the result even if the weights entered do not add up to exactly 100%.

02

Final Exam Target Solver Formula

To find the score needed on a remaining final exam, the calculator rearranges the weighted grade formula into Required Final Score = [Target Grade − (Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight))] ÷ Final Weight. A common mistake is forgetting that a required score above 100% means the target is mathematically unreachable without extra credit, and a required score at or below 0% means the target is already secured.

03

Worked Final Exam Example

With a current grade of 85%, a target of 90%, and a final exam worth 30% of the course: Required Score = [90 − (85 × 0.70)] ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 59.5) ÷ 0.30 = 101.67%. Since this exceeds 100%, the 90% target is not achievable on this final exam without extra credit.

Letter Grades and Related Tools

Calculated percentages map to standard letter grades (A+ for 97% and above, down to F below 60%), letting students see both their numeric and letter grade outcome. Use the Attendance Calculator alongside this tool to track class participation requirements, or the GPA Calculator to convert course grades into a cumulative GPA.

Quick answers about how this tool works.

A weighted grade multiplies each assignment score by its percentage weight: Weighted Grade = Σ(Score × Weight) / Σ(Weight). For example, 90% on an assignment worth 20% contributes 18 points toward your total.

Use the formula: Required Final Score = [Target Grade - (Current Grade × (1 - Final Weight))] / Final Weight. For example, to get 90% overall with 85% current grade and 30% final weight: (90 - (85 × 0.70)) / 0.30 = 101.67%.

Our calculator automatically normalizes total weights by dividing accumulated weighted score by total weight entered so far.

Letter grades follow standard university grading scales: A+ (97-100%), A (93-96%), A- (90-92%), B+ (87-89%), B (83-86%), B- (80-82%), C+ (77-79%), C (73-76%), C- (70-72%), D (60-69%), and F (<60%).

Yes! You can toggle score input mode between Percentage (%) and Points (Earned Points / Total Points) per assignment.
