The Gayatri Mantra and Its Tradition
The Gayatri Mantra, beginning "Om Bhur Bhuva Swaha, Tat Savitur Varenyam...", comes from the Rigveda and is addressed to Savitur, the Vedic deity associated with the sun and divine wisdom. It is traditionally recited during the three Sandhya periods of sunrise, noon, and sunset as part of daily prayer, and is widely referred to as one of the foundational mantras of Vedic practice.
