Gayatri Mantra Chanting & Mala Counting Explained

01

The Gayatri Mantra and Its Tradition

The Gayatri Mantra, beginning "Om Bhur Bhuva Swaha, Tat Savitur Varenyam...", comes from the Rigveda and is addressed to Savitur, the Vedic deity associated with the sun and divine wisdom. It is traditionally recited during the three Sandhya periods of sunrise, noon, and sunset as part of daily prayer, and is widely referred to as one of the foundational mantras of Vedic practice.

02

How the Tap Counter Tracks Beads

Each tap of the counter, or a spacebar press on a keyboard, adds one bead toward a 108-bead Mala, with a progress ring filling as you approach the target. You can switch to related presets such as the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra or Om chanting, or enter a custom mantra, and the tool plays a soft chime with optional phone vibration on every count.

03

Example: One Completed Mala

Reaching the 108th bead completes one Mala, which the counter logs automatically and, if auto-loop is enabled, resets the bead count to zero so the next Mala can begin immediately. For longer Sandhya sessions, the goal can be set to 16 or 108 Malas, with a session timer and chants-per-minute reading tracked throughout.

04

Related Mantra Counters

The Japa & Mala Counter offers the same 108-bead tracking for any mantra of your choice, which is useful if you alternate between Gayatri Japa and other chants. For devotional recitations counted as whole readings rather than individual beads, the Hanuman Chalisa Counter follows a similar tap-based approach.
