Statistical Range Formula

The statistical range formula measures total dispersion by calculating the numerical distance between the highest and lowest values in a distribution.

$$\text{Range} = x_{\max} - x_{\min}$$

How Mean, Median, and Mode Are Calculated

01

Mean, Median, and Mode Formulas

The mean (average) is the sum of all values divided by the count: x-bar = (sum of x) / n. The median is the exact middle value once the dataset is sorted in ascending order, or the average of the two middle values when the count is even. The mode is the value or values that occur most frequently in the dataset.

02

Why Outliers and Tied Frequencies Change the Result

The mean is pulled strongly toward extreme values, so a single very large or very small number can distort it, while the median stays close to the typical value. A dataset can also have no mode if every value appears exactly once, or it can be bimodal or multimodal when two or more values are tied for the highest frequency.

03

Worked Example with a Sample Dataset

For the dataset 12, 15, 12, 18, 20, 15, 12, 25, 30 the sum is 159 across 9 values, giving a mean of 17.67. Sorting the data to 12, 12, 12, 15, 15, 18, 20, 25, 30 places 15 as the middle (5th) value, so the median is 15, and 12 is the mode since it appears three times, the highest frequency in the set.

Quick answers about how this tool works.

The Mean is the arithmetic average (sum divided by count). The Median is the exact middle number when data is sorted in ascending order. The Mode is the most frequently occurring value in the dataset.

If two values tie for the highest frequency, the dataset is Bimodal. If three or more tie, it is Multimodal. If all numbers occur with equal frequency (e.g. 1 time each), there is No Mode.

When N is even, the median is calculated by taking the average of the two middle numbers: Median = (Middle1 + Middle2) / 2.

The Median is the preferred metric for skewed distributions or datasets containing extreme outliers (e.g. income levels or house prices) because it is not pulled by extreme values.

You can paste or type numbers separated by commas, spaces, or newlines (e.g. 12, 15, 12, 18, 20, 15, 12) or click our quick preset sample buttons.
