Keyboard Rollover Test

Test keyboard rollover online and see how many keys your keyboard can detect at once. Check multi-key input, gaming combinations and possible ghosting directly in your browser.

Best on Desktop
Desktop Recommended: Best experienced on a laptop or desktop computer.
Runs in your browser Keyboard events processed locally
Physical Keyboard Required: On-screen virtual touch keyboards do not provide the hardware keyboard events needed for rollover testing. Connect a physical USB or Bluetooth keyboard to test simultaneous key detection.

Observational Note:

These results show what your keyboard and browser reported during this session. They do not certify the keyboard's hardware rollover specification. Matrix throughput, operating-system hotkeys, and USB controller descriptors may produce different behavior on different ports or systems.

Single Keys
Rollover Hierarchy Reference
  • 2KRO / Basic Matrix: 2 simultaneous keys; common on budget non-diode membranes.
  • 6KRO (USB Boot Protocol): 6 standard keys + 8 modifiers simultaneously. Standard USB HID endpoint.
  • True NKRO: Unlimited simultaneous key recognition via custom USB report descriptor or PS/2.
HOW THIS ROLLOVER TEST WORKS (TECHNICAL ARCHITECTURE)

When you press physical keys on a keyboard, input data travels through a multi-stage hardware and software pipeline:

Physical Switch Matrix → Microcontroller Firmware → USB/Bluetooth HID Packet → OS Keyboard Driver → Browser Event Queue → EasyToolio Diagnostic Engine

What this test observes: This web instrument tracks physical keystroke concurrency using standard W3C KeyboardEvent.code identifiers, filtering out synthetic auto-repeats (event.repeat === true) to measure exact simultaneous keydown/keyup state.

Browser limitations & OS-reserved hotkeys: Certain system shortcuts (such as Ctrl+W, Ctrl+T, Alt+Tab, F11, or hardware Fn layer keys) are intercepted by the operating system or browser shell before JavaScript receives them. A missing event for a reserved system shortcut does not indicate a defective keyboard switch.

Deep Dive into Key Rollover, Anti-Ghosting & Matrix Architecture

01

2KRO vs 6KRO vs Full NKRO Explained

2KRO allows only two simultaneous keys (common in basic office keyboards). 6KRO handles six alphanumeric keys plus modifiers via standard USB HID protocol. NKRO handles unlimited simultaneous keypresses via discrete diodes on every switch.

02

USB HID Endpoints & Packet Structures

Standard USB HID reports pass an 8-byte payload (1 modifier byte, 1 reserved byte, 6 keycode bytes). NKRO gaming keyboards emulate multiple virtual HID endpoints or use bitmap report descriptors to send all key states in real time.

03

Rhythm Games & Speed-Typing Requirements

Games like OSU!, StepMania, and competitive fighting games demand zero key blocking during rapid multi-finger inputs. NKRO prevents missed chords during high APM (actions per minute) gameplay.

04

Browser Event Loop & Simultaneity Metrics

Web browsers process physical keyboard inputs asynchronously. Calculating exact peak simultaneous keys over time provides a reliable observational benchmark for real-world web gaming performance.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Quick answers about how this tool works.

Keyboard rollover is the maximum number of simultaneous keys a keyboard can detect and transmit to a computer at the exact same moment without dropping inputs.

Click "Start Rollover Test" to activate the capture surface, then press and hold down multiple keys on your keyboard simultaneously. The tool displays the currently held count and session maximum in real time.

NKRO stands for N-Key Rollover, where "N" represents an unlimited number of keys. An NKRO keyboard can detect as many keys as you physically press at once.

6KRO stands for 6-Key Rollover, the standard USB HID boot protocol limit allowing up to 6 alphanumeric key codes plus modifier keys (Ctrl, Alt, Shift, Win) per USB packet.
