Understanding Percentage to CGPA & GPA Conversions

How Indian educational boards, engineering universities (AICTE/VTU), and international credential evaluators (WES) convert overall percentage marks to CGPA and 4.0 GPA scales:

1

CBSE 9.5 Multiplier Rule

CBSE established the 9.5 constant multiplier after statistical analysis of board exam results. Reversing this formula gives CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5.

2

AICTE & Engineering Scales

Engineering universities like VTU apply CGPA = (Percentage ÷ 10) + 0.75 to account for technical coursework grading.

3

US & WES 4.0 Equivalency

For higher studies in the US, UK, and Canada, percentage scores are mapped to a 4.0 GPA scale where 80%+ maps to a 3.5 – 4.0 GPA range.

Step-by-Step Practical Calculations

Example 1: Converting 85.5% Marks to CBSE CGPA ÷9.5 Scale
  1. Identify total percentage marks: 85.5%
  2. Apply CBSE reverse multiplier formula: 85.5 ÷ 9.5
  3. Calculate result: 9.00 / 10
  4. Classification: First Class with Distinction (O Grade)
Example 2: Converting 77.5% Marks to AICTE / VTU CGPA AICTE Formula
  1. Divide percentage by 10: 77.5 ÷ 10 = 7.75
  2. Add constant offset 0.75: 7.75 + 0.75
  3. Calculate result: 8.50 / 10
  4. Classification: First Class with Distinction (A+ Grade)

How Percentage to CGPA Conversion Works

01

Percentage to CGPA Conversion Formulas

On the CBSE 10-point scale the formula is CGPA = Percentage / 9.5, while AICTE and VTU institutions use CGPA = (Percentage / 10) + 0.75. Other boards on a plain 10-point scale use CGPA = Percentage / 10, and international 4.0 GPA scales use GPA = Percentage / 25.

02

Why the Formula Depends on the Board

Each education board or university sets its own official multiplier or divisor, so the same percentage can map to a different CGPA depending on which formula is selected. The calculator also caps the result at the scale maximum (10.0 or 4.0), since no conversion formula should ever report a CGPA higher than the scale itself allows.

03

Percentage to CGPA Worked Example

Using the CBSE formula, 85.5% converts to a CGPA of 85.5 / 9.5 = 9.0. On a 4.0 international scale, 80% converts to 80 / 25 = 3.20 GPA, while the same 80% under the AICTE/VTU formula gives (80 / 10) + 0.75 = 8.75 CGPA.

Questions, answered

Quick answers about how this tool works.

For CBSE guidelines, divide percentage by 9.5: CGPA = Percentage / 9.5. For example, 85.5% equals 85.5 / 9.5 = 9.0 CGPA.

For AICTE/VTU guidelines, the reverse formula is: CGPA = (Percentage / 10) + 0.75. For example, 72.5% equals (72.5 / 10) + 0.75 = 8.0 CGPA.

For US and international admissions on a 4.0 scale: GPA = Percentage / 25. For example, 80% marks equal 80 / 25 = 3.20 GPA.

Each university autonomous body or board establishes its own grading scale regulations based on passing thresholds and honors classifications.
