Fair Hiring Practices

How to Negotiate Domestic Help Salary Fairly

Key principles to ensure lasting, respectful, and frictionless household staffing agreements:

1

Agree Task Scope First

Specify exact tasks on day one. If new chores are added later, adjust monthly compensation accordingly to avoid scope creep.

2

Benchmark on Your Lane

Rates vary by society. Ask 2–3 neighbours what they pay for similar work, using this calculator as a reliable baseline check.

3

Offer the Midpoint

Opening at the bottom floor risks quick attrition. Offering a fair midpoint ensures better loyalty and saves high rehiring costs.

4

Settle Leave & Festival Bonus

Weekly off, 4–6 paid annual leaves, 1-month Diwali/Puja bonus, and an annual review are accepted norms. Clarify upfront.

5

Pay Digitally on Fixed Date

UPI or bank transfer builds a formal transaction trail that helps workers access credit and avoids payment misunderstandings.

6

No Security Deposits

Check notified state domestic minimum wages. Never hold identity documents or deposit money as security.

Understanding Domestic Help Pay in India

01

Why the Result Is a Range and Not One Number

India has no national wage board for domestic work and no published statistical series to anchor to, so any single figure is misleading by construction. Pay is set locally, and two households on the same street can pay 30% apart for identical work depending on tenure, references and how tight supply is that season. The range this calculator returns is the midpoint minus 12% to plus 18% in metro cities, widening to minus 17% to plus 25% in Tier 3 towns where rates are least standardised.

02

Tasks Are Priced Separately, Not by the Hour

The single most common mistake is treating domestic help as hourly labour. In practice, Indian households price it per task per month: a base rate for sweeping and mopping, then separate monthly amounts for utensils, bathrooms, laundry and ironing, cooking, childcare, elderly assistance, grocery runs and pet care. That is why adding one task to an existing arrangement almost always costs more than the extra minutes suggest, and why the task checklist above moves the estimate as much as the hours slider does.

03

Live-in Pay Looks Lower Because Part of It Is Not Cash

A live-in arrangement provides food, a room and utilities, and that in-kind component is worth roughly ₹4,500 to ₹8,000 a month in a metro city. This calculator reduces the cash figure by about 22% for live-in roles and shows the estimated value of the food and lodging separately, so you can compare the genuine total cost of live-in against live-out rather than comparing a cash number against a package.

04

Budget 13 Months, Not 12

A one-month festival bonus around Diwali is not legally mandatory for private households, since the Payment of Bonus Act, 1965 applies to establishments rather than homes. It is nonetheless close to universal custom in Indian cities and is widely treated as part of the annual package. Plan for roughly 13 months of pay per year, and use the In-Hand Salary Calculator and Income Tax Calculator to see what that annual outlay costs you against your actual take-home income.

05

Know Where Your State Stands on Minimum Wages

Domestic workers are not covered by one dedicated central law, but several state governments have added domestic work to the schedule of employments under the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, which makes a notified minimum wage applicable in those states. Domestic workers also fall within the Unorganised Workers Social Security Act, 2008 and can register on e-Shram, and the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013 covers them explicitly through Local Complaints Committees. Check your state labour department for the current notified rate before finalising pay.

Questions, answered

Quick answers about how this tool works.

For a part-time maid handling sweeping, mopping and utensils for about 2 hours a day, 6 days a week, households in metro cities such as Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru commonly pay roughly ₹3,500 to ₹5,500 per month. The same work usually costs about 25-35% less in Tier 2 cities and 40-50% less in Tier 3 towns. Adding cooking, laundry or bathroom cleaning raises the figure substantially, because each extra task is priced separately in the Indian household market. Use the calculator above to build the exact combination of city, hours, days and tasks that matches your home.

A part-time cook in Mumbai preparing two meals a day for a family of three or four, working roughly 2 hours daily, typically falls in the ₹6,000 to ₹9,000 per month band. Cooking seven days a week, catering for larger families, preparing multiple cuisines, or working in south Mumbai and other premium pockets pushes the figure towards the top of that band and beyond. A full-time or live-in cook in Mumbai generally starts around ₹14,000 per month in cash, plus food and accommodation.

There is no central law that makes a Diwali or festival bonus legally mandatory for domestic workers, because the Payment of Bonus Act, 1965 applies to establishments rather than to private households. In practice, however, paying one month of salary as a festival bonus is a firmly established custom across most Indian cities, and it is widely treated as part of the annual package rather than as a gift. Budget for roughly 13 months of pay per year, and set the expectation clearly when you first agree terms so there is no ambiguity later.

Live-in staff receive a lower cash salary than live-out staff doing comparable hours, because food, accommodation, utilities and often toiletries are provided in kind. That in-kind component is typically worth somewhere between ₹4,500 and ₹8,000 a month in a metro city. This calculator applies an in-kind adjustment of about 22% to the cash figure for live-in arrangements and shows the estimated value of the food and lodging separately, so you can compare the true total cost of a live-in versus a live-out arrangement rather than only the cash number.
