EPF Calculator – Employees' Provident Fund Guide

Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is a government-mandated retirement savings scheme for salaried employees under EPFO, offering EEE tax benefits and compounding interest (8.25% p.a.).

What is an EPF Calculator?

An online financial utility that projects your total retirement accumulation by factoring in basic salary, annual salary increments, employee (12%), employer shares (3.67% EPF + 8.33% EPS), and annual interest compounding.

Key Benefits of EPF

  • Triple Tax Exemption (EEE): Deductions under 80C, tax-free interest & maturity.
  • Employer Matching: Employer matches your 12% contribution split across EPF and EPS.
  • VPF Booster: Voluntarily increase contributions beyond 12% for higher retirement wealth.

How EPF Contribution Works (Live Example)

Calculated for a monthly Basic Pay + DA of ₹25,000 at 8.25% EPF interest rate:

Monthly Basic ₹25,000
Employee Share (12%) ₹3,000 / mo
Employer EPF (3.67%) ₹918 / mo
Employer EPS (8.33%) ₹1,250 / mo (Capped)
• Total Monthly EPF Deposit: Employee ₹3,000 + Employer EPF ₹918 = ₹3,918 / month
• Annual EPF Contribution: ₹3,918 × 12 = ₹47,016 / year
• Compounded Annual Interest (8.25%): Adds compound wealth tax-free until age 58
Monthly EPF Deposit: ₹3,918 / mo Annual EPF Total: ₹47,016 / yr Retirement Security: 100% Tax-Free (EEE)

How EPF Contributions and Growth Work

01

Employee vs Employer Contribution Split

The employee contributes 12% of Basic Salary + DA entirely into the EPF account, while the employer also contributes 12%, of which 8.33% (capped at ₹1,250 per month, based on the ₹15,000 wage ceiling) is diverted to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) and the remaining 3.67% plus any excess flows into the EPF account.

02

How Interest Is Calculated and Credited

EPFO declares an annual interest rate (8.25% for recent years) that is applied monthly on the running balance but credited to the account only once a year. Because contributions and interest compound over decades of employment, even modest monthly amounts grow into a substantial retirement corpus by age 58.

03

Worked EPF Contribution Example

On a monthly Basic Salary + DA of ₹50,000, the employee contributes ₹6,000 (12%) and the employer contributes ₹6,000 (12%), split into ₹1,250 to EPS and ₹4,750 to the EPF account. So each month ₹10,750 (₹6,000 employee + ₹4,750 employer EPF share) actually builds your EPF balance, compounding at the EPFO-declared rate.

04

Voluntary Contributions and Related Tools

You can voluntarily contribute more than 12% of your basic salary through the Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF) to accelerate corpus growth, though the employer's share stays capped at 12%. Questions, answered

Quick answers about how this tool works.

Employee contributes 12% of (Basic Salary + DA). Employer contributes 12%, out of which 8.33% (up to a max of ₹1,250/month) goes to EPS and the remaining 3.67% plus any excess goes to the EPF account.

The Ministry of Labour & EPFO currently offer an interest rate of 8.25% per annum on EPF accumulations.

Interest is calculated monthly on the closing balance at the end of each month (Monthly Rate = Annual Rate / 12), but the accumulated interest is credited to the account annually on March 31st.

For most employees, EPF enjoys EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) status. However, interest on employee contributions exceeding ₹2.5 Lakh per financial year (or ₹5 Lakh if no employer contribution exists) is taxable.
