How Markdown Rendering and GFM Syntax Work

01

What Markdown Is

Markdown is a lightweight plain-text markup language that uses simple symbols such as # for headings, ** for bold text, and - for list items to represent formatted documents without writing raw HTML. It is the default format for README files, blog posts, and issue trackers because it stays readable even before it is converted to HTML.

02

GitHub-Flavored Markdown Extensions

GitHub-Flavored Markdown (GFM) extends plain Markdown with features like tables, fenced code blocks with language-specific syntax highlighting, task list checkboxes, strikethrough text, and automatic link detection. This previewer runs a client-side GFM parser directly in the browser, so the rendered HTML and generated source update instantly as you type without any document leaving your device.

03

Rendering Example

Typing '**Bold** and *italic* text with a [link](https://example.com)' renders as bold and italicized words followed by a clickable hyperlink in the live preview pane. Switching to the HTML Code tab shows the exact generated markup, such as strong, em, and a tags, which can be copied or downloaded as a standalone .html file.

04

When to Use Related Tools

Use the HTML Formatter to clean up or restructure the HTML exported from a rendered Markdown document, and the Word Counter or Character Counter to check length limits before publishing a README or blog draft.
