Part 1: The Conversion

How to Convert a Saree Rate from Per Meter to Per Piece

Multiply the rate per meter by the cut length of one saree. That is the whole calculation. A rate of ₹450 per meter on a 5.5 meter cut is ₹450 × 5.5 = ₹2,475 per piece. To go the other way, divide: a piece rate of ₹2,475 on a 5.5 meter cut is ₹2,475 ÷ 5.5 = ₹450 per meter.

Rate per piece = Rate per meter × Length in meters

Rate per meter = Rate per piece ÷ Length in meters

The mistake that costs money is not the multiplication — it is the length. Two mills can quote you the same ₹450 per meter and hand you cuts of 5.5 m and 6.3 m. That is ₹2,475 against ₹2,835 per piece: a gap of ₹360 on every single saree. Always fix the cut length before you compare two per-meter quotes.

Part 2: Common Lengths

5.5 m, 6 m or 9 m — Which Length Are You Quoting?

There is no legal standard saree length in India. What exists is trade convention, and the three lengths below cover most of what moves through a wholesale market. Confirm the cut with your supplier rather than assuming it.

Cut Length Typically Sold As Piece Rate at ₹450/m
5.5 m Plain saree, no blouse piece attached ₹2,475
6 m – 6.3 m Saree with roughly 0.8 m blouse piece in the same cut ₹2,700 – ₹2,835
9 m Nauvari / madisar style, traditional draping ₹4,050

Read the right-hand column carefully. The same per-meter rate produces piece rates that differ by ₹1,575 between a 5.5 m and a 9 m cut. If a buyer says your rate is higher than the other party's, the length is the first thing to check — not the rate.

Part 3: Worked Examples

Three Quotes, Worked Out Line by Line

A. Meter rate to piece rate

  • Rate: ₹450 / m
  • Length: 5.5 m
  • 450 × 5.5 = ₹2,475 / piece

B. Piece rate back to meter rate

  • Rate: ₹3,600 / pc
  • Length: 6 m
  • 3600 ÷ 6 = ₹600 / meter

C. A 50-piece order at 5% GST

  • Piece rate: ₹2,475
  • + 5% GST: ₹2,598.75
  • × 50 pcs = ₹1,29,937.50

On GST: this page does not decide your tax slab. Rates on textiles depend on the item and on current government notifications, and they change. Pick the slab that your accountant or the GST portal confirms for your goods, and quote it explicitly in the message so the buyer knows whether tax is inside the number or on top of it.

Saree & Fabric Rate Quoting Guide

01

Per meter and per piece are the same price, said two ways

Rate per piece = rate per meter × cut length. Rate per meter = rate per piece ÷ cut length. Neither number is more correct than the other — mills usually quote per meter, retail buyers usually think per piece, and a wholesaler has to move between the two all day.

02

The cut length is where quotes go wrong

A 0.5 meter difference in cut length moves a ₹450/m saree by ₹225 per piece — ₹22,500 across a 100 piece order. Before comparing two per-meter quotes, confirm both are for the same cut length. 5.5 m is the common plain-saree cut; 6 m to 6.3 m usually includes a blouse piece; 9 m is nauvari.

03

Say whether GST is inside the number or on top

The most common WhatsApp quoting dispute is a buyer who read a rate as GST-inclusive and a seller who meant it exclusive. Quote one number, and label it. This tool shows both side by side and writes the label into the message for you.

04

Check the message before it leaves your phone

A rate typed one digit wrong reaches the customer in under a second and is hard to walk back. The review step shows the exact message in the words the buyer will read, so a mistake is caught by you rather than by them.

Quick answers about how this tool works.

Multiply the rate per meter by the length of one saree in meters. For a rate of ₹450 per meter and a 5.5 meter saree, the piece rate is ₹450 × 5.5 = ₹2,475 per piece. To go the other way, divide the piece rate by the length: ₹2,475 ÷ 5.5 = ₹450 per meter. This converter does both directions and shows the working line so you can check it before quoting.

There is no single legal standard, but the trade sells to a few common lengths. 5.5 meters is the most widely used length for an ordinary saree sold without an attached blouse piece. 6 to 6.3 meters is common when a blouse piece of roughly 0.8 meters is included in the same cut. 9 meters (the nauvari or madisar style) is used for traditional Maharashtrian and South Indian draping. Always confirm the cut length with your supplier, because a 0.5 meter difference changes the piece rate by roughly 9%.

Because the piece rate is directly proportional to length. At ₹450 per meter, a 5.5 meter cut is ₹2,475 and a 6 meter cut is ₹2,700 — a difference of ₹225 per piece, or ₹22,500 across a 100 piece order. Quoting a per-piece price against the wrong assumed length is one of the most common ways margin is lost on a WhatsApp deal.

Only if you switch GST on. When you do, you select the rate slab that applies to your goods and the tool shows the pre-GST rate and the post-GST rate side by side, so you can see both before deciding which one to quote. The tool does not decide your slab for you — GST rates on textiles depend on the item and on current government notifications, so confirm the correct rate with your accountant or the GST portal.
