How Tile and Grout Quantities Are Calculated

01

Tile Count and Grout Weight Formula

Total floor or wall area is divided by the area of one tile to get the raw tile count, then a wastage percentage is added for cutting losses. Grout weight is calculated using (Tile Length + Tile Width) x Thickness x Joint Width x 1.6 (a standard grout density factor), divided by (Tile Length x Tile Width), then scaled up per square meter of area.

02

Pattern Wastage and Thinset Coverage Rules

Recommended wastage depends on the layout pattern: 10% for a straight grid, 12% for a brick-bond layout, 15% for diagonal layouts, and 18% for herringbone, since more complex patterns create more cut-off scrap. Thinset adhesive coverage also scales with tile size: 3.0 kg per sq.m for tiles under 200mm, 4.0 kg per sq.m for tiles up to 400mm, and 5.0 kg per sq.m for larger tiles.

03

Tile and Adhesive Calculation Example

Tiling a 4m x 3m room (12 sq.m) with 30cm x 30cm tiles (0.09 sq.m each) in a straight layout needs 12 / 0.09 = 133.3 raw tiles, which becomes 147 tiles once the recommended 10% wastage is added. Because a 300mm tile falls in the 200-400mm range, thinset is calculated at 4.0 kg per sq.m, needing 48 kg, or 3 bags of 20kg adhesive.

Quick answers about how this tool works.

Divide the total floor or wall area (Length * Width) by the area of a single tile (Tile Length * Tile Width). Add a wastage percentage to find the final count.

For a standard grid/straight layout, add 10% wastage. For complex diagonal, herringbone, or chevron patterns, add 15% to 20% to account for cut corners and mistakes.

Grout quantity is based on the joint width, tile thickness, and tile dimensions. The formula multiplies joint volume by dry grout density (typically 1.6 kg/liter) to estimate total weight.

For standard trowels, thinset coverage averages 3.5 kg to 4.5 kg per square meter. A standard 20kg bag of tile adhesive typically covers about 4.5 to 5.5 square meters.

Usually no. Joint grout width slightly reduces the exact tile area needed, but the difference is so small it is absorbed inside the 10% waste buffer. We calculate tiles count based on nominal tile sizes.
