Webcam Troubleshooting & Common Fixes

Camera Permission Blocked

Click the lock/tune icon next to your URL bar, change Camera to Allow, and click Try Again without reloading. On macOS, verify camera permissions in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera.

Black Screen or Blank Video

Check for a physical lens privacy slider, webcam switch, or keyboard shortcut (e.g. Fn + F6/F10 on MSI, Lenovo, ASUS laptops) that disables hardware camera power.

Camera Locked by Another App

If Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, OBS Studio, or Discord is open in the background, close those applications to release the camera hardware handle.

Low Frame Rate (FPS) in Low Light

Webcam sensors automatically extend exposure time in dim environments, lowering observed FPS to keep the image bright. Adding room lighting restores smooth 30 FPS.

Questions, answered

Quick answers about how this tool works.

Click "Start Camera Test" and allow browser camera permission when prompted. Your camera video preview and active diagnostics (resolution, FPS, aspect ratio) will display immediately.

If your camera is functioning, a live video preview will appear in the viewport displaying smooth motion alongside active pixel resolution and measured FPS readouts.

A black screen is usually caused by a physical lens privacy slider, a hardware privacy switch/hotkey on your laptop keyboard, or another application holding an exclusive lock on the camera.

Click the site settings / lock icon in your browser URL bar, set Camera permissions to "Allow", and click Try Again on the diagnostic card without reloading.
