Web Accessibility (WCAG 2.1) & ARIA Standards Guide

01

Understanding WCAG 2.1 Conformance Levels (A, AA, AAA)

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) outline four main principles: Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust (POUR). Conformance Level AA is the global legal standard for commercial websites and government portals under ADA Title III and EU EN 301 549.

02

Color Contrast Ratios & Visual Accessibility

WCAG AA mandates a minimum color contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for standard body text and 3:1 for large text (18pt+ or 14pt bold) and essential UI components. High contrast ensures readability for users with low vision, color blindness, or bright screen glare.

03

Keyboard Navigation & Visible Focus Indicators

All interactive UI controls (buttons, links, form fields, modal dialogs) must be completely accessible using the keyboard alone (Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, Space). Removing outline CSS without providing a visible custom focus ring breaks keyboard navigation accessibility.

04

Accessible Rich Internet Applications (ARIA)

ARIA attributes (aria-label, aria-expanded, aria-hidden, role="dialog") communicate dynamic state changes to assistive screen readers (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver). Use native semantic HTML elements (<button>, <nav>, <main>) whenever possible before applying custom ARIA roles.

Quick answers about how this tool works.

WCAG 2.1 provides technical recommendations for making web content accessible to individuals with visual, auditory, motor, or cognitive disabilities. Meeting WCAG AA standards ensures legal compliance and improves overall user experience.

WCAG 2.1 Level AA requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text (18pt / 24px or 14pt / 18.5px bold) against its background.

Alt text provides a textual description of informative images so screen readers can announce them to visually impaired users, while also helping search engine crawlers index image content.

Press the Tab key to navigate sequentially through all interactive elements on the page. Ensure every link, button, and form field receives a clear, visible focus outline and responds to Enter or Space key presses.
