The Science of Sleep Cycles

Why timing your sleep is just as important as the total duration.

90-Minute Rhythm

A typical sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes. During this time, we move through five stages of sleep: four stages of non-REM sleep and one stage of REM sleep. Waking up at the end of a cycle makes you feel refreshed.

Sleep Inertia

If you wake up in the middle of Stage 3 (deep sleep) or REM sleep, you experience sleep inertia. This causes extreme grogginess and a heavy feeling that can take hours to wear off, even if you slept a full 8 hours.

Circadian Rhythms

Your body\'s internal clock regulates your sleep-wake cycle based on light exposure. For optimal health, align your sleep schedule with natural daylight hours and maintain consistent bedtimes, even on weekends.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

The calculator uses the biological standard of 90-minute sleep cycles. It counts backwards or forwards from your target time in 90-minute intervals, adding an average of 15 minutes that it takes a normal person to fall asleep.

If you wake up in the middle of deep sleep (Stage 3) or REM sleep, you will experience "sleep inertia" and feel groggy. Waking up after 7.5 hours (exactly 5 sleep cycles) will often leave you feeling much more refreshed than waking up after 8 hours.

While adults generally need 7 to 9 hours (4 to 6 cycles), teenagers need 8 to 10 hours, and younger children need even more. Your specific needs may vary, but aiming for 5 full cycles (7.5 hours of actual sleep) is a great baseline.
