A typical sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes. During this time, we move through five stages of sleep: four stages of non-REM sleep and one stage of REM sleep. Waking up at the end of a cycle makes you feel refreshed.

The 90-Minute Cycle Formula

The calculator counts backward or forward from your target time in 90-minute increments, which is the approximate length of a full sleep cycle (light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep). It also adds the average time it takes to actually fall asleep, which you can adjust but defaults to around 15 minutes, before applying the cycle math.

Why Cycle Count Matters More Than Total Hours

Waking up in the middle of deep or REM sleep causes grogginess known as sleep inertia, even after a full night, so the tool highlights whole-cycle counts rather than a single "8 hours" target. Age groups have different optimal ranges: adults are flagged as optimal at 4 to 6 cycles (6 to 9 hours), while school-age children need 6 to 7 cycles and older adults typically need only 4 to 5.

Worked Example

For a 6:30 AM wake-up target with a 15-minute fall-asleep delay, a 5-cycle night (7.5 hours of sleep) means going to bed by 10:45 PM the night before — that is 5 × 90 minutes plus 15 minutes, subtracted from 6:30 AM.
